HISTORY: Mary Read dressed and lived as a male for most of her life. Born out of wedlock, she was dressed in boy's clothes from her infancy by her mother after her legitimate brother died, so they could continue to receive support from the family of the boy's late father. Along with Anne Bonny, another notorious female pirate, she sailed as part of 'Calico Jack' Rackham's crew. By all reports, Read and Bonny were among the fiercest fighters aboard the ship, and though Calico Jack, being Bonny's lover, was in on their secret, the rest of the crew never suspected they were women.
