HISTORY: Our swashbuckling Grace O'Malley shirt is based upon the exploits of a real female pirate. Known as the Sea Queen of Connaught, she was the noble-born and educated daughter of an Irish sea-faring family. Though most female pirates in history succeeded by posing as men, Grace made no secret of being a woman. She commanded 3 galleys and a crew of 200 men. She became so wealthy and powerful that when her sons and half-brother were taken prisoner in 1593 by the English Governor of Connaught, she petitioned Queen Elizabeth 1 for their release and was granted a face-to-face meeting to effect a truce. The English queen was so taken with the pirate queen that she granted her request, in exchange for Grace's agreeing to end her Irish rebellion and acts of piracy against England.
