HISTORY: Sir Francis Drake was a distinguished sea captain--knighted by Queen Elizabeth 1 in 1581, second in command of the British fleet that sailed against the mighty Spanish armada. Though he was a hero to the English, to the Spaniards he was a pirate they called "El Draco", or "Dragon". Sailing as a "privateer" on his flagship The Golden Hind, he enriched the English queen's coffers with vast amounts of Spanish treasure inter-cepted on its passage from the New World back to Spain.
