HISTORY: David Herriot was master of the ship, Adventure out of Jamaica in 1718 when it was taken by the notorious pirate, Edward Teach, also known as "Blackbeard". Herriot joined forces with Teach after his capture, and later served as sailing master for Stede Bonnet, another notorious pirate of the day on the Royal James, but his career as a pirate was a brief one. The Royal James and crew were captured off Cape Fear, North Carolina in September of that year. After escaping from prison with Bonnet (despite having turned King's evidence in Bonnet's trial), David Herriot was shot on Sullivan's Island (an island near the mouth to Charleston Harbor in South Carolina) in late October, 1718.
