Like a Medieval slip, chemises are worn under all gowns, bodices and skirts. Ladies and wenches of the period wore chemises to absorb perspiration and oils to protect their more costly outer garments. They serve the same function today. Many of ours are made of the same soft cotton muslin used to back baby quilts.
