HISTORY: William Henry "Bully" Hayes was a South Seas pirate born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1829. He was often called "The Last of the Buccaneers", since he came late to the pirate game. (The heyday of piracy in the Spanish Main was from the mid-17th Century to the first quarter of the 18th Century.) With his ship Leonora, he ran many trading missions, specializing in rum and rifles, but he was not averse to blackbirding, or recruiting South Seas islanders through trickery to work on the sugar cane plantations of Queensland, Australia and Fiji. The movie, Nate and Hayes was based upon the exploits of Bully Hayes.
