While chain mail protected from sword cuts, it was always possible for a hard thrust or side cut to pierce the mail, driving the broken metal rings deep into the wound inflicted by the sword. A thick, padded garment like this Gambeson, worn over the coat of mail greatly reduced the risk of those types of injuries. Ours is about 32" long. Black only, 100% cotton, hand wash. Sizes M, L and XL (see size chart below).
